Ancient Practices. Ancient Romans practiced certain sexual rituals that played out sexual dynamics of dominance and subservience and by the times of Medieval and Renaissance civilisations various forms of erotic literature illustrate power exchange and dominance/submission sexual themes.

In Modern Times the infamous Marquis de Sade, a French erotic writer thoroughly explored themes of sadism and masochism in his 18th-century works, His writings have had a lasting impact on the development of BDSM over the last century.

20th Century. During this period subcultures and BDSM communities began to flourish in inner cities. The leather culture, especially among the gay community in Chicago and New York played a significant role in shaping and developing modern BDSM.

Post World War Two saw the rise of feminism, the birth control pill, civil rights, gay rights, and widespread sexual liberation. BDSM was explored more openly with psychologists and sexologists such as Alfred Kinsey and William Masters conducting research to better understand sexual behaviours, including those relating to BDSM. When The Andy Warhol experimental art rock group The Velvet Underground sang of BDSM themes the community was beginning to extend a toe-hold into mainstream society.

Contemporary BDSM has a sense of community and education. Safe words are used and understood. Adult toys are vetted before being introduced into the community. Safe, sane, and consensual (SSC) and risk-aware consensual kink (RACK) emerged as guiding principles within the community. The advancement of Internet technology further facilitated communications and the sharing of information among BDSM enthusiasts. Online platforms gave access to individuals to connect and form sub-groups focusing on their preferred kinks.

Online social media groups join to discuss their preferences and meetings are held across the globe where kink groups meet and socialise.

The history of BDSM is one of evolution and transformation, reflecting changes in societal attitudes towards sexuality and personal expression.

Today BDSM is mainstream and is recognised as a consensual and diverse practice with communities fostering education, consent, and safety as its core values. In a relatively short period of time in history, the use of costume play, ropes, sex toys, and restraining devices is not considered by the majority in mainstream society as especially taboo.

The future of BDSM holds promising developments shaped by evolving societal attitudes, increased awareness, and advancing technology. As discussions around consent and sexual expression become more nuanced, BDSM may experience further destigmatization and acceptance. Online platforms and virtual reality could offer innovative avenues for exploration, allowing individuals to connect globally and engage in consensual BDSM experiences. Moreover, ongoing research in psychology and sexuality studies may contribute to a deeper understanding of BDSM dynamics, fostering a more inclusive and informed dialogue. Ultimately, the future of BDSM seems poised for continued evolution, with potential advancements in communication, education, and the integration of technology into consensual kink practices.
